Side Effect
There was a time with a planet containing an advanced civilization. They had evolved enough to re-think about their transport system. Until this moment, this impressive civilization had a well-designed transport infrastructure. But their problem was that their vehicles were still driven by their own citizens.
As a part of their progress, their mobility capacity became faster and bigger. So the society claims were oriented to transcend the necessity of dedicated time and energy to drive their own vehicles. They wanted an automated system in charge of performing the task. The expected benefits were to improve security, maximize efficiency and release this driving time to their own activities and pleasures while they were traveling.
In consequence, the engineers of this civilization started to work in design a system capable to drive for them. The provided element should be able to drive with precision. It must have good skills regarding orientation, speed perception, coordination, equilibrium, vision, and other features in order to measure circumstances in real-time. And be able to process all of this data very quickly to apply corrections on time to adjust the vehicle guidance. A sophisticated responsiveness system.
In addition, the diversity of vehicles was big. They had different terrain transports plus air and aquatic ones. The degrees of freedom for each condition and model was very different. The designed system should solve how to understand and connect the navigation actions for each one.
Furthermore, the developed product should navigate in coordination with the other vehicles into the transport system.
With this amazing challenge, the design phase started!
A lot of prototypes were tested. In each iteration, the engineers were learning more and more. Soon they realized that the whole operating system was a very ambitious project. Thus, other scientist specializations were required to join the project.
And many proofs of concept were unsuccessful...
The complexity of all the processes involved was requiring to expand the capabilities of the system designed. Then, the project team became bigger. New internal functions were added in order to support the main operational goals. New departments were created with specializations like biologists, chemists, linguistics, artists, and any other discipline that could provide a different point of view.
All together working to provide the main features of the system within the extra capabilities that supported them. All the related processes to generate operational synergy.
And they finally achieved it! They called it the Holistic Unique Machine Able to Navigation system. Very soon this civilization started to call it in a shorter and colloquial way: The H.U.M.A.N. pilot.
Even though the creation was a successful driving system, the holistic system produced side effects.
The final product was biological entities with feelings. They needed to live in communities. Their inner complexity made them passional, sometimes irrational. They developed into societies. They grew in number and knowledge… But at some point, Humans forgot the holism inherent in them. They started to feel isolated. They were lost into the purpose of their societies. Fear grew in them and they started to fight against themselves...
Today the project team is working hard in a second product version. They expect to provide new entities able to navigate with the same efficiency but removing all the human capabilities from the first release.
