Silent Running
We spend about one-third of our life sleeping. This repeated affirmation can be understood as a negative thing. Rather than that, to sleep is not a waste. In fact, it is a biological process know as restoration to maintain our bodies.
We spend a considerable amount of our life commuting. This becomes from the Industrial Revolution and the consequent cities proliferation. Actually, commuting time can be a measuring factor in society. The distance commuted, strictly related to velocity, has a direct relationship with the technology developed. The time in commute can impact society lifestyle as well.
What if we combine both things? Sleep Time and Commuting Time.
Sci-fi has combined it somehow in order to solve long spaceship travels. In these cases, some techniques like hibernation or suspended animation are applied. Mostly to save resources during the journey. In addition, there is a sleep regulator example to make feel shorter a flight in the movie The Fifth Element.
Why not think of a current approach?
In our present planet, we are used to commuting two hours or more. We are getting used to traveling for eight hours to discover new spots or just to visit old places and see family and friends. And we require to sleep properly.
Imagine how could be a society where the sleep time is combined with a travel system. A well thought transport infrastructure that allows us to go to bed and wake up later in a different place. Like a Bedroom-Van. One day wake up at the workplace and the next day, maybe from the same bed, wake up at home with family in a different town.
Then, some questions are raised in my mind.
How would be distributed the population on the planet? How work journeys would be scheduled? Thus, distance perception can be different. Work is in a long-sleep from home. Go shopping in a nap. Moreover, how would be the technology that supports those transportation systems? How would be the new bedrooms interior designs? There will be weekends as we already know? City breaks will be needed?
We dream about an instant teleport system. Instead, what if we are transported while dreaming?
